Two bound accounting ledgers. The earlier one has a spine title of "Harriman & Co., 1874" with entries dated 1874-1875 for
wharf and lumber account expenses, and customers who are buying lumber. It is unclear if the spine title is the actual name
of the business or a ledger that is being used for another entity. The later ledger, with a spine date "1880-1", appears to
encompass several different aspects of James Jacob's businesses including wharf collections, a boarding house, cash account,
accounts receivable for persons, including a cash account for Jacobs

James Helm Jacobs was born in Denmark in 1828. In 1853, he arrived in Berkeley as a mariner and purchased 60 acres of waterfront
property from Domingo Peralta. He built a wharf and ferry that brought grain, lumber, and people to San Francisco. Jacobs'
lumber business grew to dominate and, in 1867, became Heywood and Jacobs Lumber, a firm that supplied lumber and materials
to some of the earliest buildings in Berkeley including those of the University of California.
